How many sexual offences did George Holden commit?

George Holden, of Ashgate Road, Chesterfield, was a teacher, professional clown and a swimming teacher. His prosecution in 2021 came to light when one of his victims saw Holden in Chesterfield town centre. They proceeded to make a report to the police.

What sexual offences did George Holden commit?

On the first day of his trial in October 2021, he pleaded guilty to 13 counts of indecent assault, 2 counts of gross indecency with a child and three serious sexual assaults. These offences took place in the swimming pool changing rooms at the Queen’s Park Leisure Centre, Chesterfield, as well as his own home and, on one occasion, while he was working as a children’s entertainer in Skegness.


He was sentenced at Derby Crown Court on the 5 November 2021, when he was sent to prison for 13 years.

What sexual offences did George Holden commit?

At the sentencing hearing on the 5 November 2021, it was revealed George Holden had previously been convicted in respect of sexual offences against boys. In the 1960’s, when he worked as a teacher, he committed offences against students at a residential school for partially sighted children.  He committed additional offences against boys he was teaching to swim, at the Queen’s Park Leisure Centre, Chesterfield, in the 1970’s. These offences against 11 boys became known in the 1980’s. He was only given a community order for these offences.

We may never know how many offences George Holden committed against children in his lifetime.

What did the judge say about George Holden?

At the sentencing hearing, the judge said of George Holden, that he had caused, “"untold misery" to his victims.

"I do not accept that you for one moment thought your behaviour was normal," he said.

"You knew what you were doing from the outset was wrong and targeted young children, groomed them and then abused them.

"You clearly knew what you were doing was wrong, illegal and a criminal act.

"Your offending has had a significant traumatic affect on them.

"It's clear from the evidence you were a predatory paedophile. You gained the trust of their parents and then took their children away to abuse them.
