St Pauls School in Barnes

St Paul's School in Barnes

In early 2020 an enquiry in respect of allegations of sexual assault at the St Paul's School, Barnes revealed over 80 complaints made by former pupils, in respect of 32 members of staff, covering six decades.

Following the conviction of five former members of staff of sexual offences at the school, an enquiry was set up to investigate an increasing number of abuse allegations at St Paul's School in Barnes, south-west London.   Most of the complaints relate to a period covering the 1960s until the 1990s, although there have been some in more recent times, including complaint against staff who were still working at the school in 2017. Clearly not all the allegations relate to the distant past: one pupil who was emotionally abused and humiliated between 2003 and 2005 experienced mental health problems as an adult and killed himself while at university.

We know from our experience of acting on behalf of many pupils and former pupils at schools, across the country, these statistics are not unique to St Paul's School. Unfortunately, the story of St Paul’s is similar to many other schools across the country whereby paedophiles were permitted to abuse children, time after time, unchecked, and permitted to keep abusing children even when suspicions and complaints were raised.

Whether you are a parent phoning in respect of a child who has been sexually abused, or an adult who was abused in childhood, we will not ask you for the details of what happened.

We will ask you a limited number of questions as to when it took place, where it took place, and the broad circumstances.  We will then be able to advise you on the prospects of pursuing a successful St Paul’s School child abuse compensation claim and how we can help you to address the consequences of what has happened.

Who will I talk to if I want to make a child abuse compensation claim.

You will talk to one of our specialist lawyers, who will understand that it has not been easy to make an enquiry, to make a telephone call, to explore whether there is a case, a claim for compensation.  You can choose to speak to one of our male or female lawyers.

You can speak to our specialist Solicitor Partner, Malcolm Underhill, who leads the Sexual Assault team. He has worked for IBB Claims for over 15 years. Sexual assault compensation claims can be complex and thus a combination of Malcolm’s experience and knowledge give him a notable advantage when acting on your behalf.

One of Malcolm’s many clients described him, in 2019, as “professional, knowledgeable and sensitive to my needs”

St Paul’s School Report

The review carried out of the school records that sexual abuse appears to have been "known and tolerated by staff" at the school. In addition to allegations of sexual abuse, the report includes allegations, from the 1960s, of boys being made to swim naked in the school pool and pupils having to remove their trousers for private caning. Sadly, the behaviours of the staff at St Paul's School in the 1960s, mirrors our experience of other teaching establishments.

The report in relation to St Paul's School goes on to state, quite correctly, "we should not judge response of the school in the past by today's standards, but equally we should not forget that for some ex-pupils, the abuse that took place affected their school life and has continued to haunt them throughout adult hood".

Again, from our extensive experience of acting for survivors of childhood sexual abuse, we know that unfortunately the consequences of assault continue long after the assaults have come to an end. This is not always sufficiently appreciated but we do understand and we work hard to secure justice for pupils and former pupils of schools, not only obtaining compensation but seeking to identify what medical treatment will address the continuing symptoms, and to guide our clients towards such treatment. We particularly pursue the cost of private health treatment, whether counselling, therapy or other support, from those responsible for the sexual assaults.

Without Malcolm’s consistent support and guidance to me and my parents, I am sure I would not be in the positive position I find myself in today”.

We understand it is not easy to talk about what has happened to you, or what has happened to your child. We will certainly not ask you for details of the sexual assault, but ask a limited number of questions so that we may understand the broad background to what has happened. Such limited information will be sufficient for us to provide you with an immediate advice as to whether we are able to assist you, to bring claim for compensation on behalf of your son or daughter, or on behalf for yourself, if the assaults occurred many years ago.
