Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault

Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault

What is GHB?

GHB, or Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, is a central nervous system depressant commonly used as a date rape drug. GHB is also referred to as liquid ecstasy, Gina, or G and is similar to other drugs used in date rape such as GBL (gamma Butyrolactone) and BD 1.4 (1,4-Butanediol).

Who are the victims of drug related sexual assaults?

Date rape and drug facilitated sexual assault is often an offence more associated with woman, especially in bars and night clubs. However, the conviction of Reynhard Sinaga, a former student at Manchester University who was described as the most prolific rapist in British legal history, has brought to light instances of drug facilitated sexual assault against men.

Who is Reynhard Sinaga?

Over several years Reynhard Sinaga systematically targeted victims near his home in Princess Street, Manchester, using a range of excuses to lure men into his flat where he would use GHB to render them unconscious and sexually assaulting the men. Reynhard kept an extensive collection of images of his victims which helped the police identify them.

It was heard in court that Reynhard would boast in group chats about his latest conquest, kept belongings of his victims as trophies and took particular pride in sexually assaulting straight men. Mr Reynhard whilst assaulting one such victim on 2nd of June 2017, was attacked after the victim woke, following which the victim escaped from the flat.

This botched attack led to the police investigating Sinaga and uncovering the staggering number of sexual assaults he had committed using GHB. Over four trials from June 2018 to December 2019 Reynhard Sinaga was charged with sexual offences including rape and sexual assault by penetration against a total 48 victims, all of whom he took advantage of while under the influence of GHB. However, it is believed that the total number of victims is 195, most of whom the police have been unable to trace.

Following Mr Sinaga’s conviction and its coverage in the media, male abuse charity Safeline reported record a huge increase in calls to its hotline, the kind which they haven’t seen since the football abuse scandal came to light in 2016. They have produced statistics that reveal 1 in 6 men in the UK are targets of rape or sexual assault; these instances often occur through drug facilitated sexual assault with the aid of drugs such as GHB, GBL or BD 1.4.

Help for male victims of sexual assault

The stigma related to such sexual attacks can often prevent men from seeking the assistance they need to deal with being raped or sexually assaulted. If you are a victim of such an act you may be entitled to compensation which can be used to fund psychological treatment, on your own terms, or for other professional support necessary to overcome such attacks.

From our many years of experience of acting and of survivors of sexual assault, both children and adults, we understand the long-term ramifications of such an assault, the effects lasting well beyond when the assaults took place.
